Nutrition Tip of the Week
Body Weight Related to Blood Sugar Levels
Question
How does the fact that I am overweight affect my ability to obtain normal blood glucose levels?
Answer
Being overweight causes resistance to insulin. This means that any insulin that your body may make (or that you inject) will have a hard time lowering your blood glucose. This makes it difficult for you to control your blood glucose. In addition, being overweight may raise your blood pressure, which makes you prone to kidney disease and stroke. Being overweight may also be associated with high blood fat levels, which makes you susceptible to hardening of the arteries. If you reduce your weight, your blood glucose levels and your health will improve.
