Care Provider Focus: Say You Only Want a Little Surgery?
|
He's new to this community, but not to Orthopaedics, and he comes with a passion for doing "little surgeries."
Dr. Jeff Cartwright is a specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery and Advanced Arthroscopy.
"I haven't cut someone open to repair a knee or shoulder in a very long time," explained Cartwright. "It's just not necessary, and is a lot better for the patient. They heal faster and can get back to doing the things pain has kept them from."
At a recent mini-seminar he also explained his in-depth approach to determining the root cause of a person's joint pain. Through tests for range of motion, strength in the effected area, and how painful the tests are, he narrows the possibilities. Next he shoots dye and a numbing agent into the most likely spot. Through an x-ray, the dye tells him if the anesthetic is in the desired location. If it is, and the person feels relief from the pain, then Cartwright knows what needs to be repaired.
Originally from Montreal, Cartwright moved with his family to the U.S. at the beginning of junior high school. His involvement in sports led him to pursue a medical degree. He originally chose physiology, but a stint in the US Army and a medical school rotation through Orthopaedics changed his mind.
"I still have a big interest in Sports Medicine, and work with a lot of athletes to help them recover from injuries and get back to the sport they enjoy."
Leaving a very successful practice in Texas, Cartwright, his wife, and son wanted to live and work closer to family in Victoria.
"We are really happy to be here. This is a great community and it feels good to be close to family again."
